Herman Rosenblat IS a holocaust survivor. He did, however, write a fabricated tale about how he met his wife. According to his memoirs, which have been nixed by the publication house, he met his wife through the fence at the concentration camp he was a prisoner of.
He was a Holocaust prisoner, that much of the story is fact. He was held at Buchenwald. He did not meet his dear wife there. He met her in New York and they have been married for fifty wonderful years. He stated that he falsified the tale because he enjoyed bringing hope and love to others. He meant well, but has he done more harm than his message of hope would have brought?
In an era where nations are trying to discredit Holocaust historians and decry that the Holocaust never even happened, falsifying stories is the last thing we need. This will make people skeptical of the ones who tell the truth. I remember hearing a Holocaust survivor speak at my school when I was in junior high. I talked with him, saw the numbers tattooed on his arm. My grandfather served in WWII. He fought against this horrendous atrocity. I have seen the pictures, the video; it was one of the worst moments in our world's history. It needs to be remembered, not doubted.
Rosenblat probably has an amazing story to tell, a true story. A story that could have inspired and touched thousands. Now we will never know...
